Slash commands
Slash commands are shortcuts, typed as /name, that run a packaged prompt or skill in a coding agent.
Slash commands are the /name shortcuts you type in a coding agent to run a packaged prompt or workflow, instead of retyping a long instruction. Some are built in, like /compact; others you define.
In Claude Code, custom commands have merged into skills. A file at .claude/commands/review.md and a skill at .claude/skills/review/SKILL.md both create /review; existing .claude/commands/ files keep working, and skills add a folder for supporting files and control over who invokes them. A command file is just Markdown with your instructions:
# .claude/commands/review.md
Review the staged diff for bugs and missing tests.
Report findings as a short list, most important first.
That turns a repeatable task into one keystroke, with the same wording every run.
