CLAUDE.md

CLAUDE.md is a file in your project root that Claude Code reads at the start of every session as its rules and context.

CLAUDE.md is a plain Markdown file in your project root. Claude Code reads it at the start of each session, so it holds what the agent needs every time: the stack, the build and test commands, the conventions to follow, and the areas it must not touch. You can run /init to generate a starting one from your codebase.

Keep it short. It loads on every run, so a long file wastes context and gets skimmed. Keep live task state out of it; a file like that drifts, so a board or a plan file holds what is in flight while CLAUDE.md keeps the stable rules.

Checked against Claude Code: CLAUDE.md, /init (2026-10-23) .
